Chardham
Chardham, also known as Chota Char Dham, refers to a set of four sacred pilgrimage sites in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. These sites hold immense religious significance for Hindus, and visiting them is believed to cleanse one’s soul and bring spiritual upliftment. The four pilgrimage destinations that make up Chardham are:
Yamunotri: Situated in the western part of Uttarakhand, Yamunotri is the source of the holy river Yamuna. The main attraction here is the Yamunotri Temple, dedicated to Goddess Yamuna. The temple is perched at an altitude of around 3,293 meters (10,804 feet) and is accessible via a trek from the town of Hanuman Chatti.
Gangotri: Located in the northern part of Uttarakhand, Gangotri is the origin point of the sacred river Ganges (Ganga). The Gangotri Temple, dedicated to Goddess Ganga, is a significant pilgrimage site. It is located at an altitude of approximately 3,100 meters (10,170 feet) and can be reached by road from the town of Uttarkashi.
Kedarnath: Nestled in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, Kedarnath is home to the famous Kedarnath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. It holds special importance as one of the 12 Jyotirlingas (sacred representations of Lord Shiva). The temple is situated at an altitude of about 3,583 meters (11,755 feet) and can be reached by a trek from Gaurikund or by helicopter services during the pilgrimage season.
Badrinath: Located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, Badrinath is home to the revered Badrinath Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his form as Badri Vishal. The temple is situated at an altitude of approximately 3,300 meters (10,827 feet) and is accessible by road from the town of Joshimath.
The Chardham Yatra, a pilgrimage to these four holy sites, usually takes place from April/May to October/November, as the region experiences harsh winters and heavy snowfall, making it inaccessible during the colder months.
The pilgrimage attracts thousands of devotees and tourists every year, both from India and abroad, seeking spiritual solace and a glimpse of the breathtaking Himalayan landscapes. The Uttarakhand government and various tour operators provide various facilities and services to assist pilgrims during their journey, including accommodations, transportation, and medical facilities.
